If one segment starts to fill you can recalculate that segment gravity continuously while holding the others constant to see how the ship will sit in the fluid. These segments also neatly simplify down to center of gravity as well since you know how buoyant each segment is and where it's own center of gravity is. This works even better on larger ships where these segments can be based on actual bulkheads. Each segment was pretty much approximated as a pentagon when viewed from the front a trapezoid from the top and vertical sided rectangle from the sides. Those segments were treated as basically regular shapes when it came to calculating buoyancy.

It was full of information that would be a good start. I read a book years ago from the library on designing small boats like sailboats and motorboats. Still I haven't seen any major examples of a game being based around it. Needles to say simulating the actual water would be too much, so if there is an implementation it's probably with calculated flow, fill rate and buoyancy and then rendered from that data instead of doing metaballs from physics spheres. That would probably mean that all surfaces of a boat would need to be made out of tiny spheres which is hardly a viable solution for non-negative framerate. I've looked at Nvidia Flex recently but it seems that its performance is underwhelming even on very small scales and it simulates anything dynamic with spheres only (which does make sense for a compute shader). I think there was a 2D game a while back called Sinking Simulator that was abandoned before it really begun. So, what I'm asking is: Has there ever been any 3D game/random project that simulates ships and boats with actual fluid dynamics? I'm talking more in terms of internal flooding and simulating buoyancy with emergent density, not so much steering and movement.
